Commuters brace for overnight detours as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announces closures for I-20 Westbound at the I-820 Interchange on March 18-19. The disruption is part of the ongoing $2.1 billion Southeast Connector Project, aimed at rebuilding and widening key roadways to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance safety, and improve travel efficiency within Tarrant County. The project's grand completion is slated for 2027, as per the City of Arlington.
As of now, speed limits within the construction corridor have been reduced to 55 mph to ensure safety. The I-20 westbound ramp to Forest Hill Drive will be closed overnight from March 17-21, and I-820 will see lane reductions and ramp closures affecting traffic flow. Particularly, I-820 Northbound will be pared down to one lane between Berry Street and Rosedale Street during the same nights. To ensure motorists can navigate around these hurdles with ease, the City of Arlington has partnered with Waze and encourages drivers to download the app for optimal routing solutions.
Describing the intent of the project, the City of Arlington said, "When complete, the Southeast Connector Project will tie in the east and southeast part of Tarrant County to the central part of the county." Information on the progress of the project is updated weekly, and residents are encouraged to visit the project website or to reach the project team directly through email at [email protected] or via phone at 844-820-2870.
