Joining her in the victory lap, freshman center Ritorya Tamilo snatched the Freshman of the Year title, while junior forward Imani Perez earned a spot on the All-Defensive Team.
An ‘Iolani School alumnus, Wahinekapu also landed a spot on the All-Big West First Team. According to a Spectrum Local News report, her averages hit the mark with 11.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. These statistics proved critical for UH, driving them to a 22-win regular season and their third conference title in the past four years.
Representing New Zealand, Tamilo's impact was not just felt earning the Big West All-Freshman Team spot, with an influence seen through her averages of eight points, five rebounds, and one block per game and shattering the UH program record for blocks for a freshman with a standing tally of 38 and counting. Laura Beeman, at the helm of the team's success, was awarded Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four years. Beeman's coaching acumen was evident in UH's 22-8 overall record and a dominating 16-4 in conference matchups, reports Spectrum Local News.
The team is preparing for the Big West Tournament semifinals, having secured their spot, with a blend of veteran leadership and new talent. Spectrum Local News highlighted Wahinekapu's progression from Big West Freshman of the Year at Cal State Fullerton to becoming a key player at UH.
