A Union County pastor, identified as 79-year-old Waymon Jordan Sr., faces charges connected to alleged child sex crimes following an investigation led by the county's sheriff's office. Jordan, who founded and led services at Greater Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Waxhaw, was apprehended on Wednesday. WCNC reports that detectives from the special victims unit initiated their inquiry in February after receiving a report of a child sexual assault.
In the weeks that ensued detectives executed a series of interviews, weaving a net of evidence that eventually ensnared Jordan as the primary suspect. The charges laid out against him include four counts of statutory sex offense with a child, to which arrest records, obtained by WBTV, detail his alleged engagement in a "sexual act" with a minor, aged 15 or younger.
The severity of the accusations prompted a judge to set Jordan's bond at $200,000, a sum he managed to post following his arrest on March 6. Reporting from WSOCTV confirms that Jordan is no longer behind bars, having secured the bond needed for his release. Despite the allegations and his subsequent arrest, the pastor's connection to the Greater Blessed Hope Missionary Baptist Church adds a complex layer to an already disturbing narrative.
As the community grapples with the dissonance of a spiritual leader facing such grave charges, the legal process is only starting. The specifics of the case remain scarce, with the victim's exact age withheld and further details likely to emerge as the court proceedings unfold. It remains to be seen how Jordan's congregation will reconcile their faith with the mounting evidence presented by local law enforcement, and, whether this case will shake the foundations of trust within this tight-knit religious community.
