In a move that will see nearly a hundred workers without jobs come May, UPS announced a layoff for its employees at the 1815 W. Pointe Drive location in Charlotte. According to WSOCTV, UPS will let go of 99 workers from its warehouse on May 2. This decision affects the 'day sort' operation, a sector comprising 76 part-time hourly employees, 21 part-time management employees, and two full-time management employees.
UPS spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski Hill explained that the layoffs are a part of an initiative to "optimize the network and improve efficiency," WSOCTV reported. The job cuts span a variety of positions, indicating that UPS is making comprehensive changes to its operations. QCNews has confirmed that the facility's shuttering will, in fact, impact 99 employees at the aforementioned location.
The Charlotte community is no stranger to corporate restructurings, yet the news of job losses on this scale is particularly disconcerting for the workers involved. According to details in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, these layoffs stem "due to changes in our network," as reported by the Herald Online. While factors driving this move were not disclosed in depth, the language underscores a narrative of operational recalibration within UPS.
