A Vallejo man, previously convicted of multiple felonies, now faces federal charges for illegally possessing ammunition. Jeffrey Caldwell, 36, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges stemming from a recent standoff with law enforcement. According to the indictment, the incident involved the Vallejo Police Department SWAT Team and resulted in Caldwell's arrest.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office stated that Caldwell, due to over ten prior convictions in California and Arizona for crimes including assault, burglary, and stalking, is legally prohibited from possessing ammunition. During Caldwell’s arrest, responding officers discovered a privately manufactured firearm and ammunition in his possession. If found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of as much as $250,000.
Acting United States Attorney Michele Beckwith announced the indictment and underscored that "the charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt." The investigation preceding the indictment involved both the Vallejo Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, with Assistant United States Attorney Charles Campbell leading the prosecution. The case is part of the ongoing Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime across communities in the nation, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
On May 26, 2021, the initiative was expanded to strengthen partnerships between law enforcement and communities. The case against Caldwell is now part of a broader strategy to reduce violent crime through community involvement, strategic enforcement, and results-focused actions.
