In the heart of Waco, Texas, a third-grade student’s artwork has transitioned from the classroom to the roadside, becoming a beacon for driver awareness. In a novel approach to promote road safety, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in Waco collaborated with Gatesville ISD to transform a student's safety poster into an actual road sign. The initiative, drawing on the creativity of Gatesville Elementary students, culminated with the unveiling of a sign designed by Kamdyn Redford with the direct yet impactful message: "Less phone. More road."
According to a statement released by TxDOT, the agency's Waco area director of transportation operations, Jacob Chau, emphasized the collective nature of traffic safety, stating, "TxDOT cannot promote traffic safety alone.” He highlighted the importance of involving not just current drivers, but also future generations and their families in safety endeavors. Gatesville Elementary was chosen for this project due to concerning data reflecting a high incidence of distracted driving crashes in the vicinity of the school, an evident call to action for TxDOT and the community.
The department's local workshop diligently reformatted Kamdyn's original design to meet standard road sign criteria, ensuring that the message would be clear and visible to motorists. In a public ceremony at Gatesville Elementary, the new sign was installed, placed strategically to confront drivers as they navigate the pick-up line — a poignant reminder of the responsibility they bear behind the wheel.
Such community-driven efforts reflect a growing trend where local government agencies tap into the intrinsic creativity and insight of the young minds they aim to protect. "This type of initiative invites future drivers and their families into our efforts to enhance safety of the traveling public," Chau told TxDOT News. This collaboration not only serves as an educational tool for the students, but also plants the seeds of road safety awareness that may bloom into a culture of attentiveness and precaution on our streets.
