The Northern Community Food Security Team (NCFST) Mobile Market is set to continue its mission to bring affordable, fresh local foods to the Wake Forest community with a slightly adjusted schedule. Previously operating from 3-5 p.m., the market has trimmed down its hours and will now welcome patrons from 3-4:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, with its next appearance slated for tomorrow. According to a statement from the town of Wake Forest, this change aims to optimize the service by adapting to the observed customer flow, having often sold out of popular items before its former closing time.
Alongside the typical array of fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy, the Mobile Market will also host a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC representative tomorrow. The rep is expected to provide invaluable assistance to those with questions about Medicare, including eligibility and enrollment guidelines. Additionally, the AmeriHealth Caritas NC Mobile Wellness Center will also be present to offer blood pressure screenings and other important health services to the community.
Serving as more than just a marketplace, the NCFST Mobile Market offers a unique pay-what-you-can model for its goods. This system places the power of purchase within the wallets of all customers, ensuring that economic status does not have to fully dictate one's access to nutritious, quality products. Shoppers are suggested a total at checkout, which they may then pay in full, exceed to "pay it forward", or, if necessary, pay less according to their means. It's reported that both cash and card payments are accepted at the Mobile Market.
In 2024, the innovation of the NCFST Mobile Market has been rather well-received, serving 1,574 patrons and selling over 9,000 pounds of produce, 3,000 pounds of protein, and nearly 400 pounds of dry goods at prices averaging 57% of the suggested total. T
