In an effort to streamline waste disposal, Waukesha residents should prepare for an upcoming change in their garbage and recycling cart services. According to an official statement from the City of Waukesha, published on its website, Waste Management is scheduled to begin collecting the old carts the week of March 17. Residents are instructed to continue using them until they are removed.
The cart transition has a phased approach: during the week of March 17, those dwellings on the 'B week' recycling schedule will have their old recycling cans removed after collection, then come the 'A week' properties the following week, March 24, which will additionally lose their old garbage cans post-pickup, and by the end of the month on March 31, all 'B week' homes should ready their old garbage cans for removal, at which point any lingering attachment to those old bins must be relinquished in favor of the shiny new replacements.
Now, confusion is the last thing the city wants, so those unsure of their assigned week have been provided with tools to keep things straight: a handy 2025 Recycling Calendar replete with a map is at their disposal, and the My Service Widget lets them search by address to nail down specifics.
Behind this change is the city's contract decision to part ways with Waste Management as its residential garbage and recycling contractor by the end of March due to an expiring contract. The city will transition to Johns Disposal, a Wisconsin-based firm selected through the request-for-proposal bidding process. This shift will not affect the frequency of trash collection—garbage will continue to be collected weekly, and recycling will remain biweekly. Those interested in contract details or learning more about Johns Disposal can visit the city's website for further information.
Residents are encouraged to conform to these changes and, understandably, have this final fortnight of March as a cushion to adapt to the new waste management order—as the green bins of yesteryear make way for whatever hues Johns Disposal favors, the weekly ritual of curbside disposal enters a new era in Waukesha's municipal annals.
