Cleveland residents can expect a sweeping trough and a ridge to affect their weather this weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland. The forecast discussion indicates that the trough will move southward through the region this morning, with a ridge coming in from the Upper Midwest to near the Ohio River by this evening and lingering through Sunday. However, another trough moving across Lake Erie may temporarily weaken the ridge from this evening through Sunday morning.

Despite the weather activities, locals should prepare for mostly fair conditions with only isolated snow showers expected. According to the National Weather Service discussion, "Any fresh snow accumulations from both aforementioned rounds of light snow are expected to be less than 0.5"." Expected temperatures for late this afternoon are predicted to hit the upper 20s to lower 30s in Northwest Pennsylvania, the lower to mid-30s in Northeast Ohio, and mid to upper 30s elsewhere. With a forecast of mainly clear to partly cloudy skies on Sunday afternoon, the temperatures are set to rise, getting milder with highs anticipated to reach the upper 30s to mid-40s in Northwest Pennsylvania and lower 40s to lower 50s in Northern Ohio.

Looking ahead to the short-term forecast, Sunday night through Tuesday night, it appears to be largely uneventful with a welcome rise in temperature. "This system will also keep a low pressure system well to the south of the forecast area," states the NWS Cleveland forecast. Warm temperatures are on the docket for Monday, reaching well into the 50s and lower 60s. By Tuesday, as a strong low-pressure system sweeps through the Great Lakes and Canada, temperatures in the area could climb into the 60s, with conditions expected to be breezy. A cold front coming in Tuesday night should drop temperatures back into the 30s.

As the week progresses, rain chances for Wednesday through Friday seem to be on the decline, as opposed to views from a day ago. The passage of a cold front on Tuesday night and emerging high pressure are attributed to keeping the region mostly dry. According to the NWS Cleveland forecast, "This feature will move east for Thursday and warm air and some isentropic lift into the area will allow for scattered rain chances, but these are becoming more conditional." Looking at temperatures, they're set to surge back into the upper 50s and 60s by Thursday. Come Friday, a deep upper trough digging into the central US could prime the area for warmer temperatures in the 60s and even the lower 70s.

Regarding aviation updates, the weather service's forecast discussion points out widespread low clouds and associated MVFR to IFR ceilings are expected to clear out most of the region from northwest to southeast by mid-morning Saturday. Some lake-effect stratocumuli could persist over the northeast part of the region into Sunday, possibly bringing isolated snow showers with MVFR visibility in Northwest Pennsylvania during the predawn hours of Sunday morning.

Marine conditions on Lake Erie are also set to improve as the ridge enters the region, stabilizing winds. However, mariners should look for a potential Small Craft Advisory later tonight into Sunday as another trough crosses the area, potentially generating 4-5 foot waves. Southwest winds are favored for Sunday and Monday, with a front sweeping across the lake Tuesday night altering wind directions and potentially ushering in another advisory with the windy conditions presiding beforehand.
