A significant drug bust occurred along the I-40 corridor last week, resulting in the arrest of a woman found in possession of a substantial amount of marijuana. During a routine traffic stop conducted by the West Tennessee Drug Task Force, agents discovered roughly 150 pounds of the substance hidden throughout a rental van. According to a report by Action News 5, the traffic violation initially seemed mundane until agents grew suspicious of further illicit activities.
The driver, whose identity has so far been withheld, refused to give consent for a search, inevitably leading agents to deploy a canine partner. "The Agent deployed his canine partner, who alerted to the vehicle," per an account by Action News 5. This step set the stage for agents to legally conduct a thorough search, subsequently bringing to light the concealed narcotics. The use of a canine unit has consistently proven to be an effective measure in drug interdiction operations, enabling law enforcement to quickly single out vehicles to suspiciously carry contraband.
Johnie Carter, the Director of the West Tennessee Drug Task Force, elaborated on the case, as WREG reports. Referring to the seizure, Carter said, "A probable cause search revealed approximately 150 lbs. of marijuana hidden throughout the van." This incident is one of many that highlight the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking on major interstate highways, which continue to be focal points for such illegal activities.
Following the discovery, the suspect was arrested and is facing charges. “The woman taken into custody has not been identified. The case is being prosecuted by the Office of the District Attorney General, 28th Judicial District, Frederick Agee," as stated by WREG. The 30th interdiction unit, responsible for this arrest, operates by agreement along I-40 in Shelby and Haywood Counties, conducting traffic stops strategically to detect and to disrupt the flow of illicit drugs.
Additional information shared by FOX13 Memphis included visual confirmation of the bust, with a picture depicting over 100 bags, apparently vacuum-sealed, with some exhibiting marijuana.
