The U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of Texas has had a bustling week, with the courthouse filings reflecting a significant uptick in immigration-related cases. According to a press release published yesterday, authorities have charged 210 individuals with immigration violations from last Friday to Thursday. Acting U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman noted the inclusion of numerous offenses, from illegal re-entry to fraudulent document possession.

Among those arrested, Carlos Alberto Santoyo Holguin and Bielman Alexander PU-Ruiz, both of whom lacked immigration documents and were found in possession of fraudulent IDs during Greyhound bus inspections at the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol checkpoint. In a different case, while do not have needed immigration documentation, convicted felon Marvin Miguel US-Mendoza was arrested after agents discovered he had previously been removed from the U.S. four times. The report detailed instances of prior deportations, the most recent for US-Mendoza being on Dec. 9, 2024, through Laredo.

A broader crackdown on illegal immigration is evident, targeting not just individuals without proper documentation but also those engaged in smuggling activities. For instance, Manuel Andres-Miguel faces charges for allegedly guiding a group to a desert pick-up location, adding to his history of apprehensions for illegal entry.

Meanwhile, Ashley Nicole Dronenberg and Zachery Lee Justus were caught allegedly trafficking a mother and a hidden child in the rear cargo area of a vehicle past a Border Patrol checkpoint. On top of these smuggling cases, Jose Manuel Medellin-Guerrero was arrested during a traffic stop by the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, revealing after he had no legal status to be in the U.S., that he was a Mexican national. He faces a charge for illegal re-entry, his fourth such infraction.

The press release highlighted the collaboration among various federal law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE ERO), in referring these cases. This concerted effort falls under the banner of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative aiming to curtail the movement of illegal immigration and disrupt the activities of cartels and transnational criminal organizations.

The Western District of Texas is one of the nation's largest judicial districts and shares a considerable border with Mexico. It is clear from these cases that U.S. Attorney Leachman’s office is pushing forward with Operation Take Back America, but we must remember, as the press release states, "Indictments and criminal complaints are merely allegations and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
