The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Wind Advisory taking effect from 8 AM to 8 PM EDT this evening due to a strong low-pressure system surging northeast across the Great Lakes. The advisory, which spans most of the forecast area, warns of substantial non-thunderstorm wind gusts escalating to the 25-35 knot range, with isolated areas anticipated to experience even greater intensities.
As reported in the advisory, thunderstorms advancing from the west, with a history of 50-knot wind gusts in Indiana, are predicted to weaken upon their approach toward Ohio's less turbulent environment. Nonetheless, the possibility of sub-severe thunderstorm wind gusts remains viable, mainly west of I-71. "Could still see a few sub-severe thunderstorm wind gusts west of I-71 this morning despite the weakening trend," the National Weather Service Cleveland detailed.
In conjunction with the gusty conditions, widespread rainfall is forecasted to develop later in the day, especially west of I-77. A dry slot could potentially appear out west after midnight as an intense low-level jet takes effect. The aforementioned advisory has been extended for Cleveland and its eastward snowbelt regions through early Sunday afternoon. This comes in light of the expected showers and a few possible isolated thunderstorms preceding Sunday's cold front, resulting in temperature drops from the low 60s to the 40s.
Mariners are advised to exercise caution through Sunday evening, as the same system is set to churn up the waters of Lake Erie. The National Weather Service has extended a Small Craft Advisory due to south-southeast winds expected to intensify swiftly this morning, possibly reaching gusts of 40 knots, particularly near Cleveland and toward Erie. With waves expected to build to 3 to 5 feet, the advisory remains in effect until Sunday afternoon or evening for various zones along the lake.
The weather's tumultuous behavior continues beyond the weekend, as the report points out that another low-pressure system is set to impact the region Wednesday night into Thursday. This upcoming system will likely usher in a brief cooler air and additional windy conditions. While current models do not indicate a significant snow accumulation or severe potential, residents and travelers in the region are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and advisories.
