A deadly car crash claimed the life of a woman in East Memphis, while injuring three others, including a child, according to the Memphis Police Department. The incident occurred near Sharpe Avenue and Prescott Road, close to Sharpe Elementary School on Wednesday evening shortly after 6:30 p.m. A Hyundai Sonata reportedly veered off the road, colliding with a curb and a Memphis, Light, Gas, and Water pole, before hitting another vehicle, a Dodge cites Action News 5.
The collision caused the woman passenger to be ejected from the car, and she was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Regional One Hospital and is in critical condition; two other passengers sustained non-critical injuries and have been hospitalized. Despite the ongoing investigation, the cause of the incident remains unclear, WREG reported.
Amidst the chaos of the crash, Timothy Wilson, a former serviceman, and EMT leaped into action to help the victims, especially a 5-year-old girl who was injured but in non-critical condition. "I didn't have any thoughts run through my head. My body moved... I just did what my body made me do," Wilson recounted in an interview with FOX13 Memphis. Wilson's instinctive response to render aid has sparked a renewed consideration for him to return to the field of helping people professionally.
More than 12 hours after the incident, crews worked tirelessly at the scene to fix the downed power lines and broken transformer the crash left in its wake. The accident had triggered power outages affecting over 10,000 MLGW customers. Wilson further expressed his sorrow for the family of the deceased woman: "My heart goes out to you, like truly. I'm so sorry this happened to you," he told FOX13 Memphis.
