A Zanesville man, Herman Hawk, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he admitted to raping a child. This conviction comes after the child's harrowing testimony and a thorough investigation. According to the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office, Hawk pleaded guilty in court, and the admission prevented the need for the victim to relive the trauma through a trial.
The abuse took place in the spring of 2023 but was only brought to light in June 2024 when Officer Adam Porter responded to a sexual assault report. The family entrusted with Hawk's presence in their home discovered the monstrous act against the child, who then courageously spoke out at Brave Beginnings, a sanctuary for victims to disclose sexual and physical abuse.
Detailing the evidence that brought Hawk to justice, Detective Bryan Ruff found that the acts against the child extended beyond sexual assault and included physical harm, like being struck with a wooden spoon. A statement obtained by the prosecutor's office revealed that Hawk had also threatened the child to keep quiet, silencing her through fear. Additional witnesses corroborated the unsettling behavior, disclosing their discomfort at Hawk's physical interaction with the child.
"We admire the bravery of the victim for coming forward and the strength of her family in seeking justice," Prosecutor Ron Welch said in a disclosure documented by the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office. He also highlighted the challenges faced in such cases, stating, "Victims often find it painful to talk about what happened a courtroom full of strangers. jurors sometimes struggle to believe a child over an adult."
The family found some closure with the verdict, satisfied with the diligent efforts of the prosecutor's office and relieved that their child was spared the ordeal of a trial. The Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office, along with the Zanesville Police Department and Brave Beginnings, continue their commitment to support victims and urge the community to report abuse.
