Thirteen international students from Oregon State University are facing the harsh reality of deportation after the Trump administration abruptly revoked their visas, as the institution reported last Thursday. Additionally, two students from Portland State University and four from the University of Oregon have been caught up in this federal government sweep, bringing the total to 19 across the state.
Rob Odom, an Oregon State University spokesman, stated, "At OSU as of this morning, 13 students have had their records terminated in the federal immigration records database known as Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)," as per a report by KPTV. This move has left the students scrambling to suddenly find a new legal path to remain in the country or prepare to leave within a 15-day window. The motives behind these revocations and the transparency surrounding this process have been called into question, adding to the distress of those affected.
The specifics behind each revocation are largely unknown, with the aforementioned institutions learning of the visa cancellations post hoc. According to the reporting from Central Oregon Daily News, Oregon State University sent out an email to the community expressing their concern and detailing their actions to support impacted students, as well as their involvement in an amicus brief for a lawsuit aimed at challenging these federal actions.
Meanwhile, the legal community has begun to respond to these recent developments. Bridget Bailey, an attorney with Passage Immigration Law, told KOIN 6 News, "We do not know under what guideline or rule that these student visas are being revoked." "As quickly as we can, we're gonna ask for due process." Law firms and institutions alike are now critically trying to understand and navigate the opaque criteria driving these revocations.
In a larger perspective, this action is part of a more extensive campaign by the Trump administration, which, as reported by KPTV, has in the past targeted students involved with activities like pro-Palestinian protests. However, recent incidents have seen students with seemingly no connection to such activities having their visas revoked on grounds as minor as traffic violations, suggesting a broader and more aggressive approach to immigration enforcement.
With recent events unsettling international academic communities across the United States, universities, including Oregon State University, have emphasized their historical commitment to supporting international students and scholars. They continue to closely monitor developments and actively work to assist students affected by these federal actions, keenly aware that such policies not only disrupt lives but also potentially undermine the integrity of international educational exchanges.
