
A 19-year-old man, Jakiem Whitham, has been apprehended by the Denver Police Department in response to a shooting incident near Union Station that occurred on Monday night. The altercation, which took place in the 1600 block of Chestnut Place, resulted in gunfire and left a woman critically wounded. 9News reported that Whitham was taken into custody the following day, Tuesday.
Building upon the events, KDVR shared further details indicating that before the shooting, there was a confrontation between Whitham and another individual. During the clash, a struggle over a handgun ensued, which unfortunately led to the discharge of the weapon and the subsequent injury of the female victim. The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition, fighting for her life.
The charges against Whitham are severe, reflecting the gravity of the incident. Selected for reasons not immediately clear, the Denver Post notes that he faces allegations including attempted first-degree murder, felony menacing, and first-degree assault with a deadly weapon. Additional charges levied encompass second-degree assault and the use of a prohibited large capacity magazine, as stated by The Denver Post. In the wake of his arrest, Whitham is currently detained at Denver’s Downtown Detention Center and awaits a court hearing set for Wednesday morning.
