An 81-year-old Brookings resident, Virginia Gayle Peare, died in a single-vehicle crash on Oregon's Hwy. 255 in Curry County last Thursday evening. According to the Oregon State Police, their troopers received an automated alert about the accident at approximately 5:11 p.m. The incident report revealed that Peare's black Jeep Wagoneer veered off the road near milepost 360 for reasons yet to be determined, resulting in the vehicle rolling down an embankment.
The response to the crash involved multiple agencies; Oregon State Police took the helm in the investigation, with Curry County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Fire Department, the Oregon Department of Transportation, and CAL-ORE providing necessary support. Despite the attendance of emergency services, Peare was pronounced dead at the scene, her journey ending abruptly amid the unforgiving landscape of asphalt and earth. The highway's flow remained uninterrupted, as the investigation at the crash site did not obstruct traffic.
Details surrounding the cause of the crash are still unclear; police are looking into various possibilities that might have led to the tragic event. As of now, no further information has been disclosed regarding any potential contributing factors, and no mention of other vehicles or passengers involved has been made in the official report. The on-scene investigation concluded without the need for highway closures, hence, there was no significant impact on traffic in the surrounding area of the crash site.
The Oregon State Police has not yet released additional comments concerning the crash or the subsequent investigation. As the community mourns the loss of one of their own, questions linger in the absence of clear answers, and the heartache of sudden loss hangs heavily in the Pacific Northwest’s briny air.
