The City of Akron and the Akron Tree Commission are gearing up to celebrate Arbor Day with a community tree planting event on April 25. Set to take place at Joy Park Community Center on Fuller Street, the public is invited to join from 5-6 pm to help put down roots literally and figuratively. According to the city's announcement, it promises to be a free event, where everyone can chip in to honor trees and their significance to our ecosystem.

All told, five trees will be planted during the event, which looks set also to include live music from Summit FM and complimentary pizza and treats. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is expected to deliver a proclamation, acknowledging Arbor Day and the ongoing efforts of the Tree Commission. "We are thankful to have local organizations and city entities such as the Akron Tree Commission who dedicate their efforts to tree care and environmental sustainability," Mayor Malik said, in a statement obtained by the official City of Akron website. Attendees can closely watch a demonstration of the first tree being planted. However, four other plantings throughout the park intend to open up ample opportunities for folks to engage and learn from the arborist and their staff.

There is also a more knowledgeable side to the event. The city arborist will be available to answer questions concerning tree variety, selection, and maintenance. This includes offering advice on which trees are being planted in Akron's green spaces this year, and providing guidance on choosing and caring for trees on private properties. "It’s easy to take trees for granted as they stand silent while we go about our lives," Sarah Vradenburg, Akron Tree Commission Board Chair, told the City of Akron. "But they contribute so much to the quality of our existence. This celebration and our gratitude are small by comparison."

The event will also celebrate Akron’s accolade as a "Tree City USA" from the Arbor Day Foundation, a title based on stringent standards set by the Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. After a hiatus that lasted several years, Akron regained its Tree City Award in 2024, marking its 25th receipt of this honor. "Trees play a critical role in creating a thriving community for Akron. They clean our air and filter our water," said Matthew Knull, City of Akron Arborist, to emphasize how integral they are to the local environment and community well-being.

For those unable to attend but still interested in tree care and the work of the Akron Tree Commission, more information can be found on the City of Akron website.
