The Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) in Arizona has planned festivities at the Arizona Capitol on Thursday to celebrate Arbor Day. This annual event isn't just a pat-on-the-back for the trees, though—it's a stage to recognize the commitment of local municipalities, organizations, and individuals to the stewardship of community forests.

The day's lineup is slated to kick off with a State Arbor Day Proclamation, followed by an awards ceremony, which is part of the DFFM's Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) awards program. Soon after, attendees will get to quite literally put down roots with a ceremonial tree planting at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza. For those unable to attend in person, the DFFM has announced that the ceremony will be available to virtually join at 10:00 am through a live stream on their website.

A creative touch is added to this year's observance with a K-12 poster contest themed "Trees Remind Me". According to the department's news release, over 600 students across Arizona channeled their artistic sides into posters that evoke personal memories, cultural ties, and the various benefits of trees. The Capitol Museum is exhibiting these top submissions throughout April, offering a glimpse into the minds and hearts of the state's youth and their bond with nature.

Collaboration has always been key to driving the message of urban forestry, and this Arbor Day is no different. DFFM has joined forces with several entities, including the Arizona Community Tree Council, Arizona Nursery Association, Trees Matter, as well as utility companies like Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project. These partnerships underscore an ongoing, year-round commitment to not only celebrate but also to seriously engage with the importance of urban trees.

The public is encouraged to immerse themselves in this day of verdant revelry by visiting the Capitol Museum for the poster exhibit or joining the live event online.
