An incident in Bullhead City, Arizona, on Thursday led to a fatal police shootout with a suspect who had earlier been implicated in the theft of a mail truck. According to KSNV News3LV, the series of events began at 1:42 p.m. with a report to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office about a stolen mail truck at a junction. The vehicle's driver was not present when the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Erick Tom Watkins, commandeered the truck and fled.
Subsequently, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers located an unoccupied suspect vehicle in Laughlin. According to FOX5 Vegas, Watkins had removed mail and personal items from the truck before abandoning it around 2:49 p.m. Video surveillance and evidence from the scene helped law enforcement identify Watkins and an accompanying individual, who remains at large.
The chase escalated when Watkins reportedly stole a water taxi to cross the Colorado River into Arizona, where Bullhead City police engaged him after he pointed a handgun at an officer and fled into a nearby apartment complex. The confrontation reached a lethal climax in the complex’s parking lot, where Watkins opened fire on police officers, prompting them to return fire. FOX5 Vegas reported that he was struck by the officers' returned fire and pronounced dead at the scene, despite attempts at life-saving efforts.
Bullhead City police found Watkins, who had active felony warrants, at around 3:41 p.m. "When approached by officers, Watkins pointed a handgun at them and ran into a nearby apartment complex," as recorded in the Fox5 Vegas report. The officers involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol for such incidents. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being carried out by detectives from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Kingman Police Department.
The authorities are continuing the investigation and have asked the public to provide any information they may have on the second suspect, who is still at large. Tips can be directed to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office at 928-753-0753.
