Last year, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) had a lot to boast about, hitting impressive numbers and marking significant milestones. The airport saw a staggering 21.1 million passengers in 2024, securing its spot as the second busiest year in its history. This uptick in traffic is reflective of Austin’s continuous growth and the commitment from AUS to connect people to their destinations, both domestically and abroad. The news was shared on their website, celebrating the collective achievements of the year.
Travelers now have more options for direct international flights out of Austin, with airlines kicking off new routes to San Juan, Puerto Rico; Monterrey, Mexico; and Montreal, Canada. These additions are not just new flight paths but invitations to adventure and exploration. AUS didn't solely focus on growing its flight roster; 2024 also saw the airport make serious progress with its 'Journey With AUS' expansion program. The program saw the commencement of construction for the West Infill and Midfield Taxiway and gained council approval for the future Concourse B and Arrivals & Departures Hall.
It wasn't all about infrastructure, though. AUS kept its local charm front and center by dishing out over a million tacos, alongside 100,000+ pounds of brisket and thousands of local merchandise from Tyler's and Keep Austin Weird. A move that underscores the airport's commitment to maintaining Austin’s local flavor amidst the expansion, because what’s Austin without its famed culinary and retail offerings?
The spirit of Austin continued to resonate through the airport with more than 1,400 live music performances and 15 new temporary art exhibits showcasing the work of Central Texas creatives. As an extension of its community engagement, AUS also hosted over 100 community events and supported local organizations with substantial donations. According to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport blog, “AUS wouldn’t be Austin without live music, bold art, and a whole lot of heart,” signaling their pride in being a community hub, not just a travel hub. With a year as fruitful as 2024, travelers and locals alike have a lot to look forward to as AUS promises that they're "just getting warmed up."
