On April 16, Austinites seeking to engage in critical discussions about fair housing will have the opportunity to join forces at the City of Austin's 3rd annual Fair Housing Conference & Resource Hub, a free event hosted at the Holiday Inn Midtown. According to the city's announcement, the conference will assemble policymakers, advocates, and the public to exchange ideas and strategies for tackling housing discrimination and barriers to opportunity.
The all-day conference will feature panels led by experts, including Bryan Snoddy of the Texas Workforce Commission, who is set to deliver the keynote address on significant fair housing matters, while a Housing Resource Hub will provide attendees with access to community support services ranging from legal aid to utility assistance, the City of Austin informs. "The 2025 The Fair Housing Conference is a vital event where stakeholders can come together to share insights and discuss current issues surrounding Fair Housing," Dr. Lindsey Wilson, Director of the Office of Equity and Inclusion, shared in a statement, underscoring the conference's significance in fostering community dialogue on Austin's unique housing challenges.
April 16 was carefully chosen to harken back to the Fair Housing Act signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, which outlawed discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, or familial status. Mandy DeMayo, Interim Director for the Housing Department, remarked, "Fair Housing is foundational to eliminating housing discrimination and promoting economic opportunity for all," emphasizing the conference's role in uniting housing resources and fostering discussions on Austin’s housing needs, as they appeared in an official statement.
The collaboration between the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Housing Department will bring an array of session topics, such as the evolution of housing in Austin, legal updates on fair housing, and strategies to address homelessness, according to the conference schedule. Residents can attend panel sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., which includes complimentary meals; the Resource Hub is available from 2 to 6 p.m, and for those in need of assistance registering email [email protected] or call 512-974-3251 by April 14 to reserve a space in this significant and accessible city initiative aiming to foster inclusion and equity through housing empowerment.
