Jeremiah Malik Jefferson, a 27-year-old resident of Benicia, has been handed a seven-year prison sentence for his second federal conviction of firearm possession by a felon, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. Jefferson's sentencing came after an October confrontation where he brandished a weapon during an argument with a woman. His residence, upon inspection by authorities on November 1, 2023, yielded a stolen, loaded firearm equipped with a high-capacity magazine.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith detailed that Jefferson was already on supervised release following a 2021 conviction in a similar case when he committed this latest offense. He had been out of prison for only 10 months before this incident occurred. In a stark reminder of the justice system's complexities, Jefferson also received a concurrent two-year sentence for violating the terms of his supervised release.
The in-depth investigation that led to Jefferson's conviction was a joint effort involving the U.S. Probation Office, Benicia Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI’s Solano County Violent Crimes Task Force. Through meticulous work, Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian T. Kinsella was able to successfully prosecute the case.
This sentencing is a part of the broader initiative known as Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which unites law enforcement agencies to address violent crime and illegal gun ownership. The U.S. Department of Justice has taken steps to not only enforce the law but to also build community relationships and support violence prevention initiatives. Recently revamped in May 2021, this strategy seeks to meaningfully reduce violence and aims to create safer neighborhoods across the nation.
