Big Bear's most famous feathered family has reached a new milestone with the naming of Jackie and Shadow's two surviving eagle chicks. According to KTLA, after a community-engaged selection process that drew over 54,000 suggestions, the names Sunny and Gizmo have been chosen for the two young birds.
The Friends of Big Bear Valley played hosts to a unique election, where students from local elementary schools had a say in the final decision. Out of thirty finalist names, Sunny and Gizmo emerged victorious. As reported by CBS News Los Angeles, a list of potential names was sent to students for the crucial vote. The involvement of these young voters follows an unfortunate update where the group announced that a third chick did not survive a severe snowstorm.
Jackie and Shadow's nesting activities have drawn significant online attention, with a 24/7 live webcam allowing eagle enthusiasts and curious netizens from around the globe to peek into the lives of the avian family. The stream has reportedly garnered millions of views each day, depicting scenes of parental care that are both intimate and awe-inspiring. As described on the Friends of Big Bear Valley Facebook page, this fascination with Jackie and Shadow's brood has culminated in the overwhelming participation in the naming contest, an activity that has involved the community and beyond.
The tragic loss of Misty, the third eaglet, has been met with a heartfelt tribute, with the Friends of Big Bear Valley revealing that the name commemorates Kathi Misterly, a former member of their organization who lost her battle with cancer. "We had over 54,000 names submitted! Some people submitted 1 name, though many submitted 3 or 10, and they all added up," shared the group on their Facebook page. "Many of the same names were submitted multiple times and by different people, but everyone who submitted a winning name will receive a certificate."
