The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, in partnership with the Protect Pololū ʻOhana (PPO), has announced a temporary closure of the Pololū Trail and Lookout area on the Big Island of Hawaii. Scheduled for May 3, the maintenance closure is intended to ensure both the safety of visitors and the integrity of the site, as reported by the DLNR news release. The closure will commence early at 7 a.m. and is expected to conclude by 2 p.m. the same day.
During the brief hiatus, access will be restricted to the Pololū Valley Lookout and its parking area, as well as hiking along the Pololū Trail. The PPO, which is largely composed of lineal descendants from the area, will lead the volunteer efforts, focusing on the trail, valley, and its surrounding environment maintenance. This effort aligns with the fifth annual “E Lei ʻO Pololū” event, where, in a gesture of respect and protection, lei lāʻī (ti leaf lei) will be placed on the valley floor to honor the iwi kūpuna (ancestral remains), as per DLNR news release.
This popular destination, known for its stunning views and cultural significance, has long been a draw for both locals and tourists alike. The maintenance work is seen as crucial to preserving the site's natural beauty and historical importance. A statement from the DLNR news release expressed gratitude for the community's “understanding and cooperation” as these necessary tasks are completed.
For those planning to visit the site on May 3, it's advised to adjust schedules accordingly. After completion of the work, visitors will be welcomed back to the lookout and trail at 2 p.m., where they can once again enjoy the serene majesty that Pololū offers. Residents interested in volunteering or seeking further information can reach out to the PPO via email at [email protected], or through their social media profiles on Instagram at @protectpololu and Facebook at Protect Pololū.
