The wheels are swiftly turning for Bloomington's upcoming community health and wellness center. The City Council has given its nod to the schematic design, as revealed mid-April, and we're now barreling into the design development phase. This is where things get more concrete—quite literally—with detailed drawings and refined cost estimates. It's the final stretch before construction gear starts to hum.
Providing a glimpse into what's to come, this new facility is set to host an array of amenities, including aquatics, indoor play zones, an exercise space, and even a café. Eager to keep everyone on track, the center will also feature an indoor walking track and multipurpose rooms ready to host any event from yoga classes to senior meetups. The goal? To become a hub that everyone in the community, regardless of age or interest, can make use of.
But as we look forward to the new, we must also acknowledge the closing of an era. The Creekside Community Center shuts its doors on June 1, closing a chapter that spanned over six decades of community service. The nostalgia is real, but the transition has been planned with care. According to a statement obtained from the Mayor's memo, a whopping 95% of Creekside's programs will continue to run at alternative locations until they can be moved to the spanking new center when its doors swing open in 2027.
However, not all farewells come without their silver lining. The impending demolition of Creekside, set to start at the end of summer 2025, also rings in the promise of renewal and expansion. The new center aims to cater to a broader demographic, rolling out programs specifically devised for youth, families, adults, and seniors. Post-demolition, Bloomington residents are being nudged to not just remember the old, but also to start to get excited for the fresh offerings tailored for all ages that lie in wait.
