Bloomington is set to pay tribute to its veterans with a new memorial at Harrison Park, according to a recent announcement. The effort, a collaboration between the City and Bloomington Remembers Veterans, Inc., aims to create a peaceful, accessible space honoring those who served. With the planned enhancements, the park at 1701 W. 100th St. will not only celebrate veterans but also undergo significant improvements.
The veterans' memorial is becoming part of a larger vision, woven into the fabric of the Nine Mile Creek Corridor renewal project. This initiative is set to revamp the area with new parking facilities, better stormwater management, and community gathering spaces. However, amidst planning such a serene site for reflection, one could easily overlook the practical advantages like construction efficiency and cost savings that have been carefully threaded into the project's blueprint.
Financial backing for the memorial includes a substantial contribution from various sources. A $350,000 DEED grant has been secured, and the City is chipping in $275,000, which is earmarked for design, construction, and ongoing maintenance. In a grassroots effort, Bloomington Remembers Veterans has managed to raise $320,000, with $100,000 reserved for the construction work. The goal is to unveil the memorial by Veterans Day 2026, aligning the sentiment of remembrance with the symbolic day of honor.
Community participation is encouraged, and donations are still being accepted; those looking to contribute to the memorial can find more information on the organization's website. As reported by the City's website, with the financial goal nearly in sight, the project is ready for a timely commencement. It's envisioned as a space that stands the test of time, offering a quiet place for reflection and remembering the sacrifices made by veterans, even though the work will be carried out amid the existing park renewal.
