Bloomington has a reason to celebrate this Earth Month, as the city recently unveiled a series of sustainable milestones achieved over the last year. According to an official announcement from the city's website, these environmentally-friendly initiatives are part of an ongoing effort to combat climate change and support a healthier planet.

In 2024, Bloomington saw significant participation in its Home Energy Squad program, with 164 households making the move to energy efficiency. The Green Fleet didn't lag, integrating 7 electric trucks into city operations. On the waste management front, more than a third of all solid waste customers adopted organic recycling, with Bloomington collecting 1,835 tons of compostable material through its curbside program.

The city also turned its efforts to the enhancement of natural resources, planting 413 trees and restoring 20 acres of precious oak woodland in the Minnesota River Valley.

A nod to water preservation made the highlight reel as well, with initiatives that include collecting 3,495 pounds of debris through the Adopt-a-Drain program, and saving 556,000 gallons through upgrades to Civic Plaza's irrigation infrastructure. Furthermore, Bloomington incentivized residents to conserve water by issuing 99 rebates for water-saving devices.

These accomplishments are detailed in Bloomington's 2024 Sustainability Annual Report, available on the city’s website. The report offers a closer look into the city’s sustainability work and encourages the community to continue fostering environmental stewardship.
