The Roc Nation School of Music, linked to Jay-Z's entertainment brand, attracted students with promises of success in the industry. However, that initial appeal now seems to be fading. According to a Gothamist report, the Roc Nation School at LIU Brooklyn has landed several of its inaugural students in significant debt, despite initial promises of graduating scot-free in that department. Justice Stephenson had her eyes set on a debt-free degree in vocal performance, only to find herself combatting a $5,000 debt she managed to whittle down from five times that amount.
While the school has expanded its program since opening, with new offerings and an increased number of scholarships exceeding their original target, the shiny newness of this endeavor can't obscure the struggles of the early cohort. The allure of potential industry connections with giants like Sony and Interscope, as chronicled by Fox 5 NY, could be persuasive, but whether or not these connections translate into tangible outcomes for all students remains to be seen. Students like Justice believe they were lured in by the prospect of an opportunity-rich, debt-free education, only to find themselves burdened with unexpected financial obligations.
At least a dozen students in the first class of Hope scholars have reported owing LIU thousands of dollars. An eyebrow-raising incongruity when one considers they received offer letters that pledged they'd graduate "without debt." These financial surprises come amidst a backdrop of DIY recording studios and missed celebrity talks—Rihanna, DJ Khaled, and the Jonas Brothers were all no-shows, as per Gothamist.
Moreover, the fine print—or the lack thereof—has landed the early adopters of the Roc Nation School in a dense thicket of financial woe. Students received communication that their tuition was "fully covered," giving no indication of the extra costs not included in their scholarship. Taking out additional loans became a reluctant path for some, like Ashley Barksdale, who needed to cover more than $22,000 in unforeseen debts, told Gothamist.
On the flip side, the Roc Nation School boasts its industry connects and jumpstarting careers. Roc Nation's Academic Dean Tressa Cunningham emphasizes the monthly engagement with industry leaders and the Speaker Series, providing students a platform to engage with eminent personalities from various fields, including the NBA's Adam Silver and Fanatics' Michael Rubin, Fox 5 NY reports.
