A Bronx man has been sentenced to nine years in prison after a violent altercation on a city bus last year, an escalation stemming from what seemed like a trivial disagreement over an apartment door. According to the Bronx District Attorney's Office, Dayshawn Bannister, 29, pleaded guilty to charges including Attempted Murder in the second degree and was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Isales.
Details of the case, which originated with an apparent minor dispute, reveal the harsh consequences of a moment's rage; Bannister's girlfriend, Destiny Bryant, had a confrontation with another man over not holding the door open which led her to call Bannister who then, in what can only be described as an act of shocking violence, committed the stabbing on an MTA bus on February 15, 2024. "The defendant got onto a bus and attacked a man by stabbing him in the head," stated Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark regarding to the case.
Prosecutors detailed that after the dispute, Bryant followed the initial victim to a bus stop, where she then contacted her boyfriend; Bannister, who arrived later, targeted a passenger, Peter Crosby, mistakenly associating him with the prior incident before inflicting the life-threatening injury. Assistant District Attorney Alessandra Ambrosi, who led the prosecution, noted that the assault led to Crosby suffering a brain puncture. Bannister's sentence of nine years will be followed by five years of post-release supervision, while Bryant received a conditional discharge that includes community service for her role in the assault.
