A gas main rupture in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, has left a National Grid worker seriously injured and prompted evacuations yesterday, according to reports. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. at 160 86th Street, between Colonial Road and Ridge Boulevard, the FDNY states. ABC7NY reports that the worker was taken to Lutheran Hospital with severe injuries.
National Grid, who's crews were at the site conducting repair work on a natural gas transmission main, confirmed the gas release during the incident. Following the rupture, officials evacuated all homes on the impacted block as a safety measure. National Grid has since shut down the gas flow by closing valves at either ends of the affected section of the main, and they've stated that the leak is under control, in a statement obtained by PIX11.
The extent of the National Grid employee's injuries has not been disclosed. FDNY officials said that no additional injuries have been reported at this time. The evacuation was executed quickly, with emergency responders and city agencies responding to ensure resident's safety and manage the scene.
