Residents of Burns, Oregon, and the surrounding communities are being given an opportunity this weekend to dispose of their household hazardous waste safely, thanks to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Harney County, and the City of Burns. The free collection event is scheduled for tomorrow and will be held in the parking lot of Erickson’s Thriftway on Hwy 20.
From 10 AM to 2 PM, locals can drop off various potentially harmful items, such as aerosol cans, antifreeze, engine cleaners, and more. The event will not accept explosives, asbestos, or ammunition, among other restricted items. According to the information provided by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, containers should not exceed 5 gallons, and, if possible, items should remain in their original packaging to ensure safe transport.
Community safety and environmental protection are at the forefront of this event, with strict guidelines for how waste should be packed and handled. Items must not be placed in plastic bags but rather boxed or contained securely, and all waste should be transported in the trunk or cargo area of vehicles. These measures are designed to prevent contamination and potential accidents.
Properly disposing of hazardous materials like pesticides, solvents, and mercury-containing devices is critical in mitigating the harm these substances can cause when not handled carefully. For those with batteries to spare, the service is ongoing at local establishments, Les Schwab and NAPA Auto Parts, which serve as alternative drop-off points. Attendees are reminded that maintaining the integrity of original containers is crucial for identifying and appropriately processing the waste material.
