In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, the community of Cabarrus County is set to come together for a Pinwheel Ceremony. The event is scheduled next Wednesday, at the Cabarrus County Courthouse Plaza. From 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., the ceremony will serve to honor victims of child abuse and raise awareness about this critical public health concern. As reported by the City of Concord's official website, Paula Yost, the Chair of the Cabarrus County Child Protection Team, emphasized the impact of childhood trauma, stating, "One of the biggest dangers to public health is childhood trauma. Our team works together to reduce physical and emotional damage to children. Taking care of our kids creates a happier, healthier society where everyone."
Communal leaders and representatives from local agencies are expected to make remarks during the ceremony which will culminate in the planting of pinwheels – the national symbol for child abuse prevention. The collective effort is not only intended to educate but also to reinforce the commitment to fostering safer environments for children. In an expression obtained by the City of Concord's website, District Attorney Ashlie Shanley spoke on the significance of the ceremony. "During the Pinwheel ceremony, we invite the community to stand with us as we raise awareness of child abuse and work to prevent it," Shanley shared.
Attendees of the event are recommended to don blue attire as an expression of solidarity in the movement against child abuse. Further, participants can support the cause by capturing images of the blue pinwheels scattered across the town. By sharing these photos on social media with the hashtag #CabCoProtects2025, the community can collectively amplify the conversation surrounding child abuse and prevention.
