Canutillo High School's talented Stage Players have once again proven their dramatic prowess, paving their way through the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) Class 5A One-Act Play competition. Earlier this week, they edged out competition from other schools to secure a spot at the upcoming Regional Competition, which is set to take place in Lubbock later this month. "What this group of students has done is nothing short of amazing,” declared theater teacher and Canutillo Stage Players sponsor Jesse Ramirez, as obtained by Canutillo ISD.

The accomplishment speaks volumes about the team's dedication and skill, as this marks the first time in two decades that Canutillo has advanced this far into the competition. This year, Canutillo chose "Amadeus" by Peter Shaffer for their production, a choice that seems to have resonated excellently with the audience and judges alike. Earning top distinctions during the Area round, the troupe has to now compete against five other schools at Regionals in hopes of clinching one of the two coveted spots for the state tournament.

Not only did the Canutillo Stage Players showcase their acting talents, but they also garnered praise for their technical mastery. Actors Michael Smith and Angel Pachco were each named to the All-Star Cast, exemplifying the standout nature of their performances. The high school further was recognized for its backstage prowess, picking up the Best Technical Crew Award, a testament to the holistic strength of the Canutillo theater program.

En route to the state level, the Canutillo drama group appears confidently ready to not only participate but also to actively compete for top honors. “This is great for Canutillo and great for El Paso,” said Ramirez, as per Canutillo ISD, reflecting the significance of this achievement not just for the program or the school, but for the broader community they represent. As the Regional competition looms, eyes are set on these enterprising young thespians, whose next act could well be a historic one for Canutillo High.
