Carrboro is increasing its celebration of the written word, with Mayor Barbara Foushee officially proclaiming April as Poetry Month. The community can look forward to a variety of poetry-themed events, catering to both poetry enthusiasts and casual writers. Starting with the 'Writing Together' workshop led by Carrboro Poet Laureate Liza Wolff-Francis on April 7, followed by numerous open mics and a special Earth Day event, there will be plenty of poetic activities throughout the spring, according to the town's announcement.
The celebration will feature both virtual and in-person events, offering a variety of activities to suit different preferences. Key events includes "Chime In" Poetry Open Mic at Lanza’s Café on April 11 and April 25. On April 19, a seedling giveaway will take place, with participants contributing to a communal poem tied to Earth Day. Additional events include the "Set Free" open mic at Bow Bar and an evening of Poetry, Popcorn, & Pie with local poets at the Century Center on April 28, as per the town's announcement.
Since 2002, Carrboro has supported poetry by creating the role of poet laureate to promote poetry within the community. This tradition is reflected in the town, where each Town Council meeting begins with a poem reading. The initiative is part of a national effort started by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, which designated April as National Poetry Month to celebrate poets and encourage the public to engage with poetry.
