Residents of Catawba County, it's time for some spring cleaning. Mark your calendars for May 3 when you can safely dispose of those pesky household hazardous wastes that have been gathering dust in your garage or basement. According to a news announcement by Catawba County, the annual collection event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds, conveniently located at 1 American Legion Avenue in Newton.
The event is absolutely free but is exclusive to Catawba County residents. For those plan to attend, patience is a virtue—be prepared to wait in line due to the high turnout expected. Remember, no trailers are allowed on site. Participants will be glad to know that clean Styrofoam and packaging foam will be accepted for recycling. Take note, however, that bendable foam, sheet foam, compostable peanuts, or home insulation won't make the cut.
Undoubtedly, this collection event provides a great opportunity to get rid of a broad range of hazardous materials that can't be tossed into the regular trash. Paints, automotive products, chemicals, and even outdated electronics can be safely disposed of here. As an added incentive, residents turning in plastic bags will walk away with a reusable bag, as part of the "Keep Catawba County Beautiful" initiative. And, as Catawba County notes, "The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office will offer collection of unwanted medications and prescription drugs,"—just remember to leave those sharps and needles at home.
Certain items however, are off-limits. Tires, radioactive waste, biologically active materials, and any unidentifiable substances are a no-go. TVs with broken screens or removed internals, large appliances, and business waste will also need to stay home. For the security conscious, rest easy: the county assures that all data on electronic devices will be destroyed, although they do not guarantee the non-disclosure of any information left on these devices. If you've got leftover paint (no spray cans), electronics or household batteries, and it's not May, the Blackburn Landfill is your year-round pit stop for responsible disposal.
With the proper disposal of these hazardous materials, Catawba County is not only keeping its streets cleaner but also its environment safer. The community-wide effort is a testament to preserving the natural beauty of the county and safeguarding public health. So, dig into those cluttered corners of your home and gather your hazardous waste—for May 3 offers a free, accessible conduit to do right by your space and your planet.
