U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized 193 pounds of cocaine on Sunday last week at the Ambassador Bridge port of entry. The drugs, packed in bricks, were found in two duffel bags inside a commercial vehicle heading to Canada during a routine inspection. Testing confirmed the substance as cocaine, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection press release.
Following the discovery, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized the truck and trailer and began federal prosecution against the Canadian driver.
Port Director Marc Calixte stated in the same release, “This is yet another recent example of the commitment our officers have to protecting the American people from the scourge of dangerous drugs. It’s amazing enforcement work by all involved.”
This is the third major cocaine seizure in Detroit by CBP Field Operations since March 21. Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon said in the release, “Safe and secure international commerce is essential to protecting the homeland. Rest assured that we’ll continue to leverage all available resources to disrupt the transnational drug trade and those seeking to exploit our Michigan ports of entry.”
CBP officers and agriculture specialists screen international travelers and cargo to detect illegal drugs, unreported currency, counterfeit goods, and other prohibited items. ICE Homeland Security Investigations is leading the ongoing investigation.
