In a significant development for Central Oregon's ongoing battle against drug trafficking, Ricky Fontaine, a major player in the regional fentanyl distribution network, has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison. This sentence marks the culmination of a concerted effort by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the rising tide of opioid-related crimes in the area.
Details from the U.S. Attorney's Office reveal that Fontaine was apprehended on April 1, 2023, following a vehicular stop initiated by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. At the time of his arrest, Fontaine made a futile attempt to elude detectives on foot, however, he was swiftly detained and a subsequent search unveiled more than 1,000 grams of fentanyl in his possession, alongside a handgun and drug paraphernalia.
Fontaine, 32, from Bend, Oregon, faced the justice system steadfastly, pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl by December 4, 2024. His penalties include a 135-month prison term, followed by five years of supervised release, a reflection of the seriousness with which federal authorities are treating cases involving potent opioids like fentanyl.
Fentanyl's lethal potency was underscored by Acting U.S. Attorney William M. Narus, who noted that "a 3-milligram dose of fentanyl—a few grains of the substance—is enough to kill an average adult male."
