A tragic accident in the Hickory Grove Division has taken the life of a bicyclist after a collision with a car. Stephen Bradley Lawson, 39, was struck by a vehicle on Albemarle Road and succumbed to his injuries four days later, as reported on Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) website.

The incident occurred last Thursday, when Lawson, riding westbound in the left lane without any marker lights, was hit by a gray 2008 Honda Accord. Arriving officers found Lawson unresponsive and transported him to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. Unfortunately, on Monday, Lawson was pronounced dead, having never recovered from his life-threatening injuries.

Following the crash, CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search teams began a thorough inquiry into the events leading up to the collision. The CMPD's report mentioned that neither speed nor impairment seemed to be a factor for the driver of the Honda. The investigation is ongoing, awaiting toxicology results for Lawson, which have yet to be disclosed publicly.

Law enforcement officials have stated that Mr. Lawson’s next of kin have been made aware of the unfortunate loss. This incident is a sobering reminder of the hazards present on the road, especially for cyclists navigating alongside larger vehicles. It brings to light the importance of visible safety equipment for bikers, particularly during night hours when visibility is diminished.
