Yesterday, a scenic hike on Mount Diablo took an unexpected turn for one hiker. When a distress call occurred, the California Highway Patrol's (CHP) Golden Gate Division Air Operations team sprang into action. According to the CHP's social media post, the hiker suffered what was suspected to be a broken leg on a remote trail.
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District swiftly requested the CHP H-30 helicopter to assist in the rescue operation. The crew managed to locate the injured party quickly in the mountainous terrain. Demonstrating precise coordination, they skillfully lowered a helicopter rescue technician paramedic from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District to provide immediate assistance.
The helicopter extraction proved necessary due to the remote location of the incident, which was along a narrow single-track trail that was not easily accessible by traditional emergency vehicles. As detailed in the CHP Golden Gate Division Air Operations' post, the hiker was carefully hoisted up from the trail and transported to an awaiting ground ambulance.
