The City of San Antonio has recently enhanced its public art collection with the unveiling of "City Lights," a new sculptural installation located at the entrance of City Tower on 100 W. Houston Street. Created by the local artist trio R&R&R—Robert Diaz de Leon, Ronny Eckels, and Ryan Takaba—the artwork brings a blend of modern design and local heritage to the downtown area, as detailed by the City of San Antonio.
The nearly nineteen-foot sculptures offer a modern interpretation of tradition, designed to reflect the surrounding city environment. "This project speaks to its surroundings, blending history, culture, native plants and wildlife, and lighting to reflect San Antonio’s city lights,” said Krystal Jones, Director of the Department of Arts & Culture, in a recent statement on the City of San Antonio's website. The installation aims to enhance the area’s appearance while serving as a welcoming feature for those accessing City services and symbolizing key aspects of San Antonio’s identity.
R&R&R chose a Pecos Red color for the lamp posts to reflect the city’s historic downtown architecture. The artwork includes native Yucca blossoms, symbolizing protection, and incorporates steel and bronze butterflies and vines inspired by Queen’s Wreath, representing local plant life and the migratory patterns of butterflies. The installation represents a combination of the city’s history and natural surroundings.
