As the whispers of spring promise to soon chase away the chill, Cleveland residents can expect some fickleness in the weather over the weekend and into next week. According to a forecast discussion from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland, a weak low-pressure system that has been hovering over Upstate New York will be absorbed by a more robust system in the Mid-Atlantic, resulting in variable conditions in the days ahead.

For those of you hoping to neatly pack away your winter coats, hold off a moment. While a high-pressure system will usher in some dryness and clearer skies on Saturday, the weather refuses to settle, yielding to an incoming warm front on Sunday. This pattern may "quickly to change" the current stagnant lower temperatures and cloud cover. Highs are expected to be in the cooler range of the 40s to lower 50s on Friday and lows dropping into the 30s at night.

Looking ahead, Sunday could bring some light rain showers as weak moist isentropic lift ahead of the warm front takes effect, though most of this should be light with "dry low-levels so POPs are low," as NWS Cleveland explains. Temperatures should rise moderately into the 50s on Sunday, offering a small reprieve from recent cooler temperatures. And in a reluctant concession to warmth, parts of the region may hit 60 degrees.

Monday might start off calm enough, but as the day unfolds, a cold front is expected to bring a mix of showers and possible thunderstorms. NWS Cleveland cautions that "with a strong front passing through near peak heating with some instability developing, a round of showers and perhaps thunder is a decent likelihood." Although such dramatics may tempt us to make much ado about nothing, it's worth noting the potential for severe weather, as winds could pick up significantly.

As for marine conditions on Lake Erie, all seems quiet for the weekend, but sailors should anticipate choppier waters starting Monday. NWS Cleveland expects northerly winds up through Friday evening, which then shift, presaging potentially "rough conditions" especially east of the Islands, heading into the middle of the week. Boaters should be ready for Small Craft Advisories from Monday through Tuesday night.

By Tuesday, the region will fall under the influence of an upper trough, ushering in cooler, breezier, and showery weather, forecasters say. While conditions are set to dry out with high pressure into Wednesday, yet another trough threatens to unsettle the peace by Thursday, reinforcing the mantra of 'April showers'.
