The search for a new judge to serve on the Coconino County Superior Court is officially underway, as the Commission on Trial Court Appointments opens the process to public input. The vacancy comes as Judge Elaine Fridlund-Horne prepares to step down, prompting a thorough selection process to identify her successor.

Four candidates have been named: Charles W. Doughty, Bryan F. Shea, Paul V. Stearns, and Marianne E. Sullivan. Each is under consideration for the prestigious position, tasked with upholding justice in Northern Arizona’s largest county.

In a move reflective of the judicial system’s commitment to transparency and civic participation, the Commission is actively encouraging public feedback ahead of the scheduled interviews on May 1. These interviews, open to the public, will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Jury Assembly Room of the Coconino County Superior Court. Details about the candidates and the interview process will be available on the Commission’s website at least one week prior.

Written comments from the public must be submitted by April 28, either via email or traditional mail. Importantly, all submissions must be signed, as anonymous feedback will not be considered.

Once the Commission has conducted its interviews and reviewed public input, it will forward a shortlist of at least three finalists to Governor Katie Hobbs. From that list, the Governor will appoint the next judge — a role with significant influence over the interpretation of laws and the administration of justice across the region.
