Coconino County has launched an online marijuana expungement program, a forward stride for proponents of criminal justice reform. This new initiative is available through the Coconino County Attorney's website, where individuals can apply to clear eligible convictions from their records. According to the county's announcement, the service enables a more streamlined process, directly aligning with the state's Prop 207, which legalized recreational marijuana use.
“Providing residents with a pathway to expunge eligible marijuana-related convictions, is an important step in supporting our community,” Coconino County Attorney Ammon Barker was quoted in the launch announcement. Completing the online form is all that's required to start the expungement process, and from there, an attorney from the county will review and manage the requests. The accessibility of this program is enhanced by its no-fee policy, ensuring that past convictions can be expunged without additional financial burdens.
Some distinct features are highlighted about the new program. The efficient handling of the process aims to foster a hassle-free experience for those applying. Applicants must present proof of eligibility for expunging marijuana convictions under Arizona law. This opportunity provides substantial benefits by potentially facilitating improved access to jobs, housing, and more for those affected by past convictions.
Barker further emphasized the importance and impact of the program, stating, “We’re committed to helping individuals rebuild their lives and move forward.” Expungement, he suggests, has the power to unlock doors that a criminal record may have kept firmly closed. The program appears to recognize the evolving societal perspective toward marijuana-related offenses and the value in fostering opportunities for those who have served their time.
Residents with eligible past marijuana convictions are invited to seek more information and submit their expungement requests through the Prop 207 Marijuana Expungement Request Form.
