Governor Greg Abbott recently announced a $1.3 million investment in Collin County through Skills Development Fund (SDF) grants awarded to Collin County Community College District (Collin College). The funds are designated to provide customized training for over 840 workers at 13 local businesses in fields such as healthcare, accounting, and manufacturing, according to a release from the Texas Governor’s office.

"Investing in our workforce is critical for the success of the Texas economy," said Abbott, reflecting the core message of the official announcement. The grant is projected to funnel a pipeline of skilled workers into Collin County's thriving job market. Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Bryan Daniel chimed in, highlighting the grants' role in training both new and current employees for in-demand occupations. While presenting the awards, TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III made note of the collaboration between Collin College, local businesses, and community efforts.

The four SDF grants come with specific targets. $362,157 of it will train up workers for employers including Natural Polymer and Fiber Systems International. They'll be immersed in skills from fiber optics to industrial wiring. Another $478,770 will go towards training for Encore Wire Corporation and StatLab LLC, among others, focusing their energy on electrical maintenance and computer services. Meanwhile, a $353,072 slice will enhance the talent pool at CSG Forte Payments Inc. and Portable Solar with training in solar energy, healthcare, accounting, and more. Lastly, $158,958 is dedicated to Helm Dental Laboratory LLC and Unicom Engineering workers, reshaping skills in risk management and manufacturing.

Since its launch in 1996, the Skills Development Fund (SDF) has been a key driver of workforce development in Texas. The program works alongside public community and technical colleges to support job creation and skills training. According to the Governor's office, it has contributed to the creation of over 435,000 jobs through partnerships with more than 4,900 employers. This investment marks an important step for Collin County, supporting its growth within Texas' dynamic economy.
