A recent update from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has identified 51-year-old Vonderrick Rayford as the suspect in a shooting incident that embroiled a Colorado Springs police officer in mid-April. According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, the event took place on Sunday on the 4900 block of North Academy Boulevard, where officers were called to a reported disturbance involving multiple individuals around 12:25 p.m.
Upon arrival, witnessing at least one gunshot, a female was observed lying on the ground by the first responding officer. She was hurriedly transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently listed in critical condition. As the responding officer exited her vehicle, she was met with gunfire, prompting her to fire back at Rayford, who subsequently fled the scene on foot. The Metro Crime Lab's preliminary DNA analysis, combined with video surveillance footage and collected evidence, pointed to Rayford as the primary suspect, the Sheriff's Office revealed.
In a grim twist of fate, Rayford was found to be involved in another officer-involved shooting in Dallas County, Iowa, a mere two days later, which culminated in his death. Further inquiries regarding this confrontation have been directed to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, as mentioned in their communication. Both the Colorado Springs Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their investigations into the North Academy Boulevard shooting and have not disclosed further details at this time.
