In Coon Rapids, a slice of suburban bliss is about to get a fresh dash of fun for the kiddos. Burl Oaks Park, tucked away in the city's northeastern quadrant, is on deck for a playground overhaul, courtesy of the City of Coon Rapids' annual parks facelift initiative. This isn't some whimsical wish list; the redesign comes hot on the heels of a local survey wherein, according to a statement obtained by the City of Coon Rapids, "We got over 40 responses and over 90 percent of the respondents picked the one playground (design) that we will be installing this year." Hat tip to the neighborhood for having their voices heard.
The new and improved play area is all about inclusivity, sporting ADA-compliant structures that promise to cater to children from two to 12 years old — more power to all our little adventurers. Now, let's talk materials: we're looking at a creative mélange of wood chips and rubberized surfaces, according to Recreation Supervisor Ryan Gunderson's intel. And for those tots with mobility needs, there'll be some port in place points for getting onto the equipment for ADA accessibility.
Swings, slides, and climbing bars will be featured in this playpen paradise, including a tall slide that takes a leaf out of Lions Park's book, though on a less grandiose scale. When it comes to dollar signs, 150 grand is the magic number the City is dropping on this spruce up. It's a solid investment when you consider the longevity of the setup, pegged at a minimum of two decades of rough and tumble.
Come late summer, the old gear makes its exit stage left, clearing the way for the new kids on the block. It’s no child's play — the planning and execution of this project reflect a dedication to revitalizing local hubs of activity and leisure, ensuring they keep step with community needs and expectations. One thing's for sure: when the ribbons cut and the little ones break in their new stomping ground, it'll be a neighborhood milestone. And yours truly will be peeking over the fence, just to see those joy-filled faces. Because, let's face it, a community's heart often beats strongest in the laughs of its children.
