Residents of the DeMun area experienced a wave of crime last week, waking on Monday to shattered vehicle windows as part of a series of police-involved incidents reported by the Clayton Police Department. A witness, who heard a car alarm around 12:30 that morning, spotted "two male subjects running toward a waiting car," described as a gray, boxy, four-door sedan, according to a statement obtained by the City of Clayton's official website.
The same day Officers also responded to a burglary on the 6400 block of Alamo, where residents discovered thefts from a basement storage room. Unfortunately, no suspects or witnesses have been identified at this time. Meanwhile, the Clayton Municipal Court has several upcoming dates to address various offenses, ranging from public urination and disturbance in Oak Knoll Park to shoplifting at Walgreens and possession of stolen property.
Another incident occurred Wednesday morning when a victim returned to her parked car on N. Bemiston Ave to find her driver's window broken and the interior rummaged through. Surveillance captured a male figure breaking the window, rummaging, then checking other vehicles nearby. In an effort to enhance community safety and crackdown on such episodes, Clayton PD has encouraged locals to register surveillance cameras through the Community Camera Program.
Not all nefarious activities went unresolved though, a driver involved in a hit and run on Clayton Rd. later provided the necessary insurance information after the victim presented camera footage. In a separate event, on Thursday, a man was arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident at Westwood and Wydown. Further traffic-related events brought additional consequences for various individuals including an arrest on Wydown Blvd., when an Officer discovered a controlled substance inside a vehicle. Yet, in another incidence of theft, a Walgreens employee reported a man who made off with cigarettes without payment; the suspect fled in a heavily damaged silver Audi SUV.
The week concluded with a distressing assault report from a woman who detailed her encounter after a date at a local bar. The would-be suitor gave her money to cover their tab and then "punched her in the mouth before driving away." Meanwhile, Clayton's streets saw a U-Haul box truck towed from Big Bend Blvd. and Wydown Blvd., after it was found blocking the road with a license plate reported stolen from St. Louis in February. Clayton PD continues to seek cooperation from the public and improve their investigative capabilities as they handle these ongoing cases, as per the City of Clayton.
