In a recent push to uncover information regarding a mass shooting in Memphis, CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County has increased the reward for tips to $25,000. The deadly incident occurred during a gun violence prevention meeting organized by the Memphis Allies program of Youth Villages on April 9, leaving one person dead and five injured. According to Action News 5, the reward is intended for any citizen who can provide anonymous information that will facilitate in identify suspects.
The tragic event took place outside a community meeting aimed at curbing the city's gun violence. Matthew Williams, 22, was fatally shot at the scene, and other victims suffered varying degrees of injuries. As WREG reports, the generous reward comes after additional funds were donated to help solve this crime. "I am sure someone knows something that could lead to an arrest in this murder," David Wayne Brown, executive director of CrimeStoppers, expressed. The amount will be given to any individual whose tip leads to a warrant and/or an arrest.
Memphis Allies, a part of Youth Villages, initiated their gun violence prevention program in 2022, in partnership with community organizations, in response to an upswing in local gun violence. This shooting underscores the ongoing crisis that the initiative aims to address. Present at the time of the shooting, Memphis Allies said in a statement obtained by FOX13, "We are heartbroken over the senseless act of gun violence on Wednesday that claimed the life of a Memphis Allies program participant at one of our sites."
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH (2274), ensuring strict anonymity. The hope is that the increase in the reward will incentivize those who are reticent out of fear or apathy to aid in bringing those responsible to justice. As CrimeStoppers' director, Brown, told FOX13, "It could be someone who saw something that could help investigators or someone who has learned something since the shooting." The increased reward mirrors the organization's dedication to solving a crime that shook a community striving for peace in the face of rampant gun violence.
