Following a string of measles cases in various states, including Pennsylvania and Ohio, CVS Health has proactively offered the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine across its many locations. As reported by CBS News Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania residents, particularly adults, can now receive vaccinations at CVS pharmacies. MinuteClinics provides doses to children aged 4 to 6 for their second recommended shot.
Early April saw the confirmation of two measles cases in Pennsylvania, sparking a statewide initiative from CVS to curb the disease's spread. In Ohio, CVS announced its readiness to vaccinate residents after the state declared its first case of the year. More than 500 CVS locations in Pennsylvania are advertising the availability of MMR vaccines, a reaction to the rise in confirmed measles cases, which also encompass states like Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, and more, as TribLive detailed.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has underscored that symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic red, blotchy rash, which may appear up to 14 days after exposure to the virus. According to the same CDC data, serious complications of measles can progress to pneumonia and encephalitis.
CVS has provided guidance for those uncertain about their immunity, noting that most individuals born before 1957 are considered immune, and those who received two MMR vaccines are also in the clear. However, revaccination could be necessary for adults born between 1963 and 1967 who might have gotten an inactivated measles vaccine, which does not offer the same level of efficacy as the live vaccine.
